The Persistence of Persistence - Marion J. Hutchsack

January 2, 2018

This picture was taken during Hutchsack’s 9 day performance piece entitled “The Persistence of Persistence”. During this piece the artist sat motionless for 9 straight days while concentrating on bending a spoon with his mind. In order to accomplish such a feat, Hutchsack was hydrated intravenously and fitted with a catheter. When asked if he succeeded in bending the spoon Hutchsack responded, “What is a spoon? Furthermore children, what is bend?” Influenced by the work of Joseph Beuys, Hutchsack unfortunately enjoyed little fame during his life. Hutchsack died at the age of 93 due to complications from deep vein thrombosis.
